Filed in Press,

I read the interview, it is very touching.

Once I bump into this site which introduce a chicken house, with it, you can keep the chicken in your garden and eat fresh eggs. It is cool, looks like an iMac.

But with Chicken Flu, then seem we should not keep a "farm" in our house.

i also found your interview in next magazine very touching. just dont give up!
i think uve earned many hong kong peoples respects. looking forward to more and more perfermances from u, kwok wing ^^

  7. kathy says:

after reading the next magazine, i was very impressed by ur persistence to puruse ur dreams. You are the best foreign actor in HK. Dont give up. I believe you will become a pop star one day. :) There is a Chinese saying I will always support you!

  8. yvonneyucm says:

I got to know about your website from the Next Megazine. I am very impressed by your kindness to animals. Everybody of our family love dogs. Dogs are so true and honest, much contrasted to mankind!

Wow, your picture in the website looks so much like Kevin Cosner(spelling???). I am 40 years old too. I grow up with your shows on TV. Although you are not the main character in most of your shows, I can tell that you take every one of our role seriously. That's what a professional actor should do and tell your what, the audience got sharp eyes. And I am not saying this to make you happy, your acting, as well as your Cantonese, has improve a great deal through the years. I can barely tell the name of the many new young faces in TV, but I bet you are recognised by most of the Hong Kong people. Sometimes, I feel some of the local actors very annoying, but I think few people in Hong Kong find you annyoying becuase we can tell you act with your heart and it is that little piece of heart that deserves our respect and applause.

There are two kinds of men in term of age. Some just get fat and bulky, like James Bullushi, Tom Hank(Thank God, he can really act), Ah Lak(Chan Pak Cheung, but he is rich), Choi Fung Wah(poor guy, he is...???). The other lucky ones are Sean Conery, Leung Chiu Wai, Harrison Ford, Andy Lau, Chow Yun Fat. Their masculine charm did not come out until they have turn 'Old". You are one of the lucky ones who are able to age in the good direction. So, do not give up. Keep it up. If Chow Yung Fat can do it in Hollywood, you can do it in Hong Kong too. Your effort is and will be recognised.

    Best,

    Yvonne

keep up the good work and most importantly.. enjoy what you're doing to the max. i think what's important is not so much what you achieve in the end, but rather a satisfaction in the process and i'm sure you've enjoyed it all @ TVB !!

Also, you act well and many HK people remember you!I have ever imagined that there is a drama that is starred by all English speaking people(many artists can speak good English)...that would be a breakthrough hahaha....maybe you could suggest it to someone in TVB some time?? Anyway good luck to your career^.^

    Hi Greg,
Opposite to you, I am a Hongkie girl who lives in Australia and married to an Aussie!!! Interestingly, I chose to leave HK for Australia and you did the opposite. But in a way, our experience is quite similar too!

I have noticed you in TVB dramas for a long time and am really amazed by your level of Cantonese (even if my hubby could be just a quarter of where you are at, that will be great already!!!) and your extent of HongKong"ness". I had done a search on Google with your name but this web site didn't turn up! Now I know your URL, thanks to 一周刊! Years ago, I was already wondering why they didn't interview you. I think the subject itself is very interesting already.

Congratulations to your main role in 香水. I have read a review by 石琪 in 明报 a few days ago and he gives compliment to your acting. So keep up the good work!!!

The interview in 一周刊 is really good! I am impressed by your persistent and the spirit of "not giving up". My career is not going anywhere here either. But I have to keep pressing on too even though there are so many things not under control.

So take care and all the best to your career!! My regards also to your wife and all your doggies!! :)

  18. Coyote says:

    Dear Greg,

Got your website address from your interview in the Next Magazine. Don't give up! A lot of us like to watch your acting, and I really admire your respect for the HK culture. Wish you the best of luck in your drama and your career!

    Hi Greg:

Like others, I follow the link at Next Magazine to your website. I am glad that they finally profiled you.

Just want to let you know I highly respect your acting and professionalism. Wish I had a chance to see 'the Fragrance'. Your hard work will be paid, at least, by the respect from the audience watching you.

Thank you for loving the Chinese culture. Thank you for the entertainment you have brought us for all these years. Believe me, a lot of people never see you as an extra in the TV dramas. You have played a very unique role in the Hong Kong TV culture, and you will be never forgotten by us!

    All the best!

  27. Tina says:

    Dear Greg:

I think you are a great actor. I still remember you as the serial killer who killed women wearing his ex-wife's perfume. You speak Cantonese fluently, and that's rare as most foreigners only speak Mandarin. I am happy for you that you have your wife's support and I wish you luck in your career. You do not need to be the main character in order to be remembered by the audience. I watch all TVB soap operas, and I will be just as happy to see you in a tiny role. I admire your perseverance and keep up the good work!

Wish you and your wife happiness and joy.

    Hi Gregory

I just finished the onlie reading from 一周刊, your interview was pretty moving ^_^, I was moved by your brave, your kindness to dogs (coz I am a super dog lover as well ^^)... your interview did bring me HUGE encouragement!!!

As I am an international student in New Zealand, nearly the same situation as you in 19 years ago, I feel quite lonely sometimes, I don't have much kiwi friends, the closest mate to me are my doggies! A Australian Silky Terrier and a naughty Jack Russell Terrier. I love dogs so much!

    Hi,
I got your webpage from the next magazine too. Even me, from mailand China, knows you too. I have watched you in TV for so many years, and did not expect there is a story like this behind you since as you said, you always played 'powerful people' in TV.

Your story is so touching! There are so many people who lived their whole life doing nothing, without dreams. You live for your dreams! I am inspired by you! Keep on working hard! No matter you would become famous like 'Zhang Guorong' or not, you would still be the winner of life! Hope to see your touching side in TV or movie later!

    Hi Greg,

So, you are not alone. In fact, I am a bit jealous as you have so so many people from all over the world to support you, admire you.

Same as the other, got your web info from the magazine. Happy to know more about you, not only from the TV. Just want to say I am one of the people who appreciate what you has been doing in your life. Keep it up.

I just finished reading your interview by Next Magazine and I found your web site from ‎there. I am a Chinese American who had been living in the US for the past 12 years. I ‎totally understand your frustration on trying to break through the barriers (whatever it ‎was: race, language, culture etc) in order to fulfill your dream.‎

Success is a Journey, not a Destination! Try to look back and see what you have ‎accomplished so far. I would say a lot. Bottom line, you know how to type Chinese and ‎I don't (I was born and raised in HK).‎

I have much respect for what you have accomplished in HK. Keep up the good work. I ‎just hope that I get to see Perfume on DVD or something. Keep up the good work and ‎enjoy your journey!‎

    Best Regards,‎

    Hi there,

I read the NM and learned about this website. The first thing I looked at was the "PET" topic as I'm also a dog lover. I used to have a pomeranian, which was put to sleep last year due to sickness and old age. I was really upset and the incident changed my view towards things --- life is not as long as we think and it's just so fragile !

I'm also now doing a job which I like but don't get much out of it... it's depressing, but I believe that our efforts will be recognised one day as long as we do everything with our heart. Just see how many people had dropped by already and left their messages to you ! :)

Take care ! (and say hi to the doggies !)

    Greg,

A passionate, not least inspirational, person like you will soon find success in many ways I believe. You must be delighted to learn that there are people really do care for you out there. Well, if you ever feel bored or something you can always do something positive, like setting up your own fan club. It might not be the biggest fan club, but it surely would be the most heartwarming one on earth. So, do give it a thought, ok? :p

Everyone loves you. So, keep up the good work. Hope to read about you on SMH or The Age in a not too distant future, then the TWP, TWJ, NYT and ...

Godspeed on your show. It's really good I heard.

PS. You're truly intriguing as you age.

I've just read your interview in Next magazine, and it's really touching, to say the least. It takes a lot of courage to go to a completely foreign place to persue your dream like you did, and your love for dogs is another thing that I found very heartwarming.

You've already become an icon in the Hong Kong television! Work hard, you've got our support :)

  51. TOKOZAN says:

By the way, why don't you try putting some of your songs on the web and make them available to everyone (that's how 林子揚 got his chance to play in 頭條新聞) for the sake of "testing-the-water" (Market-testing).

Free stuff is always welcome, and "河國榮 makes his own M P FREE" has the potential to become a hot topic of the city.

If it turned out to be a good thing, you could then release your own EP album and commercialize it on a small scale at low cost.
(if 夏金城 could make a fortune, why wouldn't you give it a try?)

I REALLY think you CAN SING.

  56. timmy says:

Hey, I have known your name 河國榮 when I was a child already. I am now 19. During this years, whenever we talked about 河國榮 this name, nearly all of my friends know who you are. Even though if they forgot your name, they know what you look like and what role you have played in the TVB dramas. I like to see your acting. I hope TVB can support you more. Please act more good dramas for us!

  61. Candy says:

    Hi there,
I still remember there was a movie long time ago you played a cop and DoDo was the lead-actress. Your role was quite important too.
    Keep it up!!!!!!!

  62. Watchsnow says:

    Hi Greg,

I havent got the chance to read the mag article because I am living in Brisbane Queensland right now. I have been living in here for 4 years while studying psychology in the uni... Living in a different culture is never easy and I am still adjusting. I think we would have pretty similar feelings in struggling in a foreign country.

When my first time to have class discussion in my tutorial I was so anxious. Because I didnt have the right words to express my opinions and feelings. I was lonely when I came as I didnt have a true friend here. But now, I am getting better and I am loving this country now, which is, your homeland. I am still facing a lot of challenge in my life such as career and financial problems..... You are not the only one, not just you from Queensland to Hong Kong but also me from HK to Queensland.

I love your acting very much and I remembered that I have talked about you in my everyday chitchat with my frds many many times. Your Cantonese is PERFECT even better than many "Australian-born Chinese" here you know! I think almost everyone who live/ lived in HK remember you! I am so impressed by your Chinese articles in the webpage.... It was error-free!

After reading all the comments above I think I wont miss out the mag I am gonna try to get one from the Chinese newsagent though it is supposed to be expensive =) hehehe~*

    With loads of support!

    Hi Gregory,

I have been watching TVB series in which you took part in for years. Your excellent Cantonese and familiar face have made me forget your origin as a "gweilo"; you are already part of Hong Kong.

I truly appreciate your efforts in chasing your dream against all odds. I understand how frustrated you sometimes may feel, but all of us who have watched your performance -- even though you probably did not take the leading role -- do think that you are great.

You are a real example of dilgence, courage and determination. I am not really happy with my work, but I will try to learn from you!!! I really like you! Please keep up the good work!

    Best wishes,
    Krissie

  67. karina says:

I've read your interview. I believe you are the most successful non-chinese artist in hk.

I've been "watching" you for a great deal of years now. After all these years seeing you play minor roles like gateguard, policeman and government officials, I really admire your dedication and passion to your profession. I suddenly found that I've become one of your fans!

It's nice to know you're doing so well in the on stage drama recently.

    Keep up the good work.

    Mr. Ho Kwok Wing:

I am a viewer of TVB (in Chicago) and I recently read your interview from ONE magazine and found your website.
I watch you for years on TV. I think your Chinese is better than a lot of Chinese, especially those American Born Chinese.

I do think you are a great actor. You act really well, better than many others. Years ago I saw you in a movie starring DoDo Cheng, in "Cousin, You are Great", where "cousin" refers to people from mainland. You play a guitar and did some singing. I remember that scene for years. Most of your roles are some top police officials or missionaries in Hong Kong which I think you did real well.

  75. Polly says:

I am deeply impressed by your interview in next magazine. I recently being confused with my future, always think of should I continue to put effort on my job? should I even strive for it? Am I being a silly thing if I keep on it?

But after I read your interview, it inspires me alot and it encourage to continue my work, to do the best every day and always hold the faith....now I decided to work harder, believe in myself....all these is because what you say in the interview....Thanks! Your story really makes me touched....

PS. I am also a Mac user ^_^v

    Hello Greg,

I have just read your interview in next magazine. It is very interesting about how you see your life as an actor. And i also think that you are very optimistic. I just hope that Next Magazine will do more interviews with you. I love to read about the supporting actors/ actresses' stories. And i am very impressed that you have the guts to keep 10 dogs with you and your family. I wish i can do that too, but too bad now i am still living with my parents and they think that i am not responsible to take care any "living thing" other than myself. Well, i wish you happy Greg. Wish you and your family all the best. Good luck for you play too.

  77. Edward says:

I've just read the next megazine.

  78. Jess says:

I just read your interview with Next Magazine, it was so touching that it almost made me cry. If I were you, I would have given up long time ago, because I am a pessimistic and impatient person. unlike me, you're tough and optimismic! You deserve what you are struggling for and I believe you will make it someday! Please remember that there are many people that always support you and that enjoy your performance!

  79. odette sohan says:

I just read your interview with Next Maganize. I really respect your guts for going to HK from Australia 20 years ago..I can feel your passion about HK culture. I was going to ask for your autograph but I was such a chicken:> I left HK to Sydney for school ever since and I'm working in America now. If you don't mind, can you tell me where you lived in Australia? I lived in Sydney for 3 years and now living in Washington in USA. The alst thing I want to say is "Don't give up on your dreams! Hi Mr. Rivers,

I have also read the interview in Next Mag. I think I have learnt about you in some other magazines/ websites before (i remembered an article in HK Magazine, quite some time ago). The part you talked abt that nowadays the roles you play are less diverse as those you did before, I felt sorry for you. But pls dont give up, and you should know that you are very popular among HK audience already~ and that your acting is being recognized by local people.
When i first saw the poster of Perfume in MTR station, i felt excited to know that you are taking a leading role in stage drama performance. It's too bad I don't have time to watch it to support you, but i do hope you can have performances like this again in the future.
    Keep up the passion!

    Cheers,

    Dear Greg,
You won't feel lonely anymore, look at all these fans supporting you at your back!
I was born in Hong Kong (30th of April too! but 9 yrs older than you) I came over to live in Sydney in 1987. My daughter is now in Uni, so I can return to full time job. I understand how you feel, exactly like I am facing. I want to start my career again and has finished a few courses in TAFE. I have got myself well prepared and keep job hunting every week. I once got very depress, feeling hopeness. Thanks heaven, I am thinking positive again! The fact is, no body can help you. Everytime you fall down, you have to get up quick. You won't be that lucky there is a hand there to pull you up everytime. Life is up & down. The most important thing is learning how to balance yourself. Agree!
I am also a dog lover. I even taste the dog food first everytime I try a new product for them. They are all under 2 kg. (long coat chi-wa-wa, yorkshore & Pom) I love them so much. They are my spoiled children.
You are great person. You are so nice to animals. You love HK. Your effort to learn Chinese. Your enthusiasm towards your career. ............ I SUPPORT YOU ALL THE TIME !!!

    Wendy fr Sydney.

  88. René says:

After reading your interview in Next Magazine I decided to drop you a line. I would like to thank you for your great performances throughout the years. Being a Chinese guy born and raised in Europe, one of the few ways for me to get in touch with Hong Kong culture is watching TV programs. I literary grew up watching you on TV and I have nothing but respect for your dedication and hard work. Keep it up!

嗨﹗ I stumbled onto your website acutally, but I'm one of your fans from Toronto Canada (you're international!). I think you're doing really well, and fans including myself (many in Canada aswell) do appreciate your performances. I didn't know that you were Australian, but it's all good. you were great in 精迷黑森林 by the way! But anyway, I have a question...is it that you and your family reside in Hong Kong, or do you travel back and fourth. Just a curiosity that some of us over the sea have been wondering. Thankyou, and support you all the way.

  96. 河國榮 says:

Victor, I reside in HK. I only go home to Australia once every few years. fortunately, phone calls from Hong Kong to Australia are cheap so we can talk without worrying about the expense.

oh i have always thought you were a hong kongnese born british, never knew you were an aussie.
theres something i respect you a lot, that you would spend the time on learning the native language here in hk..which you can speak it pretty well now...
as far as i observed...most of the westerners grew up here cant manage any basic cantonese.....it might not be necessary to learn. for them...but...oh well...nevermind
